Moreton Bay Regional Council will invest more than $1.8million in three new street sweepers, as well as a new and a refurbished waste compactor with the announcement of two new tenders at today’s council’s coordination meeting.
Council’s spokesperson for Asset, Construction and Maintenance Councillor Peter Flannery said council awarded the tenders on Tuesday 5 September, including one tender totalling $1.29million for the purchase of a 26-tonne landfill compactor as well as the upgrade of council’s existing landfill compactor.
“The new landfill compactor, which will be based at the Bunya waste management facility, will compact up to 65 tonnes of waste material each day, equivalent to about 8400 plastic shopping bags full of groceries, prolong the lifespan of the facility and reinforce council’s $47.9 million investment to waste services in 2017/18,” Cr Flannery said.
“This investment complements council’s waste initiatives to reduce waste and promote recycling. Council’s waste minimisation program last year won the Premier’s Sustainability Community Award recognising that 62 schools and 18 early learning centres across our region have completed or are currently implementing waste reduction initiatives through council’s waste reduction scheme.
“By engaging our youngest residents, we hope to promote positive flow-on effects to recycling and waste minimisation not only at school, but also at home.”
Council also announced a second tender today with a total value of more than $564,000, to purchase three new compact street sweeper vehicles to help maintain the region’s network of 3,300km of sealed roads, 500 bridges and thousands of kilometres of footpaths.
“These compact sweepers will help to service CBD areas across the region and foreshore pathways, in a bid to keep our streets and footpaths looking neat and tidy,” Cr Flannery said.
“The sweepers will be able to hold 1500 litres of silt and rubbish, equivalent to about six residential kerbside bins, collected from footpaths and shopping precincts across the region.”
Cr Flannery said it was important to invest in the new maintenance vehicles and equipment to ensure our local streets and waste facilities are maintained to the highest standard.
“In 2016, our region generated 351,000 tonnes of waste from day to day activities, which is equivalent to about 845 kg of waste per person each year,” he said.
“Council is committed to investing in new equipment to meet the waste management demands of our growing population, which is set to grow by 40 per cent in the next 20 years, to reduce waste and promote resource recovery.”
Moreton Bay Regional Council employs a number of holistic waste reduction initiatives across the region including:
· Free tipping for residents;
· Green waste recovery and free mulch for residents;
· Treasure markets at Caboolture and Dakabin;
· Assisted waste collection service for residents with medical approval;
· Community, school and early learning centre waste education workshops, tours and presentations;
· Support for community events including Clean Up Australia Day, International Composting Awareness Week and National Recycling Week; and
· Annual regional recycler competition.
