“Saving lives, one trip at a time.” That’s how Shane Bourne sums up the purpose of Fishability Queensland.
“Fishability Queensland saved my life, and I know it’s done the same for numerous others,” the Fishability Queensland President said.
“Men don’t talk unless they’re amongst other men. We created our men’s group wholly and solely to get the boys together out on the boat for a fish so they’re in a safe space to share their stories and talk about whatever they’re going through.”
The group provides socially inclusive fishing experiences for disadvantaged people in the community, and it was one of 12 groups to receive a Unitywater Community Grant last year.
Applications are now open for the 2023 UnitywaterCommunity Grants Program, which supportscommunity groups across the Moreton Bay, Noosa andSunshine Coast regions to access up to $5,000.
Unitywater Executive Manager Customer andCommunity Katherine Gee encouraged local groups to apply.
“At Unitywater we want to support the communities where we live and work and we’re proud to have funded hundreds of essential community initiativesover the last 12 years,” she said.
“These community groups are the experts at what they do and our grants help them continue their importantwork.
“Being an essential service, Unitywater understands the importance of continuous and reliable services, and these grants could mean community groups can offer their services more often or for longer.
“Our grants program is about supporting essentialinitiatives that keep communities healthy and we’re working to broaden it to match our support with whereit’s really needed.”
To launch the 2023 grants program Unitywater hosted a Community Connect event at Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre on Tuesday 26 July.
Community groups that work across domestic and family violence, homelessness, mental health, the environment and youth services came together toshare the importance of initiatives like Unitywater’s Grants Program to help keep their services operating.
The event also featured a grant-writing workshop toassist in writing successful applications.
