Back open for business!

News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club

John Nedwich at Chinchilla fossicking area

Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club has reopened their workshop which is a relief for members who have been waiting for this to happen.

The club is open on Thursday mornings (9am – noon) and Saturday afternoon (1pm – 4pm). There is a limit of four members who can attend each session at one time.

As there is limited movement from machine to machine in a lapidary workshop, the club does not have to spend time cleaning/wiping down between machines. In any case, most members will spend their time on one machine for the duration of their session.

A source of cutting material that members have is Gem Shows held by Lapidary Clubs

If you would like to come and look at our workshop give John or Lloyd a call on 3351 1038 or 3351 2093.

The field trips that the club usually makes, especially in the cooler months, have been put on hold due to the uncertainty of access to fossicking areas as well as the border being closed to the New South Wales fossicking areas.

Most members have a stockpile of cutting material which they have accumulated over the years, so it is the newer members that this curtailment of field trips is a disadvantage to. Another usual source of cutting material that members have is Gem Shows held by Lapidary Clubs around the Brisbane region but these have all been cancelled for this year.

We hope 2021 is a better year for our hobby and people are able to travel around and enjoy the great outdoors in collecting their favourite gemstones.
