Bringing local bowlers together

On Tuesday 4th August, many of Ashgrove Bowls Club’s former players played their first social bowls game at Gaythorne Bowls Club, after the recent unfortunate closure of Ashgrove Bowls Club.

The following weeks were challenging for bowlers from the Ashgrove club as they had to manage everything to formally close their club’s facilities. Many of them also had  to transition to their new home at Gaythorne Bowls Club.

To welcome Ashgrove bowlers to Gaythorne, the club executive hosted a free BBQ lunch at the club on the 15th August from 11am to 12:15pm for all Ashgrove and Gaythorne members. The lunch was a huge success and many friendships were formed.

Gaythorne Bowls Club will now have three days of social bowls games on a Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon, with club competitions on Saturday afternoons.

In addition, ‘Introductory Learn to Bowl’ sessions will be taking place in September and October in conjunction with Brisbane City Council’s GOLD (Growing Old Living Dangerously) Program. This program is designed for people aged 50 and over, however all other ages are welcome to attend and participate in the sessions. The club started its association with the GOLD program in 2016 and has introduced many people to the game of bowls and several of the participants have joined the club to continue improving their skills in this game.

A bit about the Gaythrone Bowls Club.

This local bowls club is a central meeting place for locals as the club hosts other clubs and organisations including a stamp club, 8 ball club and social events, line dancing and probus meetings to name a few.

The club has a fully operational catering kitchen and dining area with a raised stage and polished timber dance floor. This facility is available for hire for all social and work functions.

At the moment, the club is without a chef and is also looking to find someone who can take on this role and develop a possible catering business using the club’s facilities. For more information about this opportunity, contact gbscc@bigpond.com
