The 2019 Dickson Seniors Expo
Thank you to everyone who attended the 2019 Dickson Seniors’ Expo. This was the 16th year of the Expo and with over 1500 people attending, it was a fantastic event.
We had over 60 stallholders and focused on promoting health and wellbeing for seniors.
I was incredibly proud to have local legend and Samford TerryWhite Chemmart Owner Karen Brown speak at the Expo.
Karen has done a lot to help people improve their health, first in Samford, and now also at the Arana Hills TerryWhite Chemmart.
Under Karen’s leadership, TerryWhite Samford was awarded the prestigious TerryWhite Chemmart of the Year award for 2018.
The ever popular fashion parade was back again as well as other live entertainment acts. We also had the Brisbane Vintage Auto Club bring some amazing vintage cars down to the event as well.
Thank you to the Dickson Seniors Council for all their hard work in organising this year’s Expo and to everyone who came out over the two days.
New Child Protection Laws
In September, we had child protection week and it is a timely reminder that children’s safety is everybody’s business.
The Attorney General and I have been working on some important reforms to help protect our kids and crack down on predators.
Reports showed in the last 12 months that 28% of people convicted of a child sex offence did not spend a single day in jail. This is a failure of our system and is totally out of step with community expectations for these types of crimes.
That is why in the first week of the September Parliamentary sitting period, the Coalition Government introduced legislation for mandatory sentencing of paedophiles and child sex offenders.
By ensuring convicted paedophiles and child sex offenders are jailed for their crimes, we are making our community better and safer for our kids.
Healthcare in Dickson
I’m pleased to let you know Medicare is stronger than ever and bulk-billing is at record levels. 136.5 million GP visits nationwide were bulk-billed, 3.3 million more than the previous year.
In Dickson, bulk-billing is up 7.9% from 2012-13 with 84.5 percent of GP visits bulk-billed in the last year.
Planning for the Headspace facility in Strathpine is well underway and this should be open in 2020. This will be an important service for young people in our community and I am working hard to make sure it is open as soon as possible.
