The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club is now operating on a sign in basis.
Workshop times on a Thursday are from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing of material and from noon to 3pm for Silversmithing.
The Club has an annual field trip to the Chinchilla area for petrified wood. The petrified wood found in the Chinchilla area is regarded as some of the finest and colourful wood found anywhere in the world.
This year, we will be going to Chinchilla in September. The reason for this is we are combining the wood searching trip with a bit of sightseeing. We intend to travel from Chinchilla to Miles, and then north from Miles to Gurulmundi. We will leave the highway here and travel through the Wildflower country. This is the time of the year when the wildflowers are at their peak in this area. This road through the forestry area takes us back to the Warrego Highway and we then travel east to Miles and Chinchilla. A brochure of this trip can be obtained from the Miles Visitor Information Centre.
Chinchilla has two Fossicking Reserves where you can fossick for Petrified Wood and Fern. The Visitor Information Centre in Chinchilla has all the details. These two fossicking reserves are pay digs. Also, you must have a Queensland Fossicking Licence to dig for wood on these reserves.
