Ferny Grove State High School’s German Immersion program allows students to develop an exceptional level of German language proficiency through learning the regular curriculum in German. Near end of Year 10, students can travel to Germany on a three-week exchange program. They stay with German families, attend school and tour Germany.
Each year students sit the ‘Fit in Deutsch 2’ examination. It is conducted globally by the Goethe Institut and demonstrates German language ability against the common European benchmark A2. As a result of achieving highly in this exam, students are entitled to apply for a PASCH Scholarship (Partner Schools of the Future) which includes a fully funded three-week language course in Germany.
Furthermore, the school will host a German Corporation day on Monday 22 July. Leaders from German businesses in Australia will speak about the value of German language to their business operations and opportunities for German language students in Germany or Australia after school.
In other German Immersion news, a group of Year 7 students recently spent time decorating cloth pencil cases (Mäppchen) with motifs of Australia and Germany. They included a short letter (auf deutsch natürlich) about themselves. These have been sent to another PASCH school in the Philippines to students of a similar age who are also learning German.
