Have a shot at the new sensational simulator

Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed

The new simulator

2020 has got away to a flying start at the Brisbane Tramway museum with the addition of the new tram simulator.

This new attraction is now fully installed in the ticket office/shop where it can be easily accessed by kids of all ages who wish to ‘drive a tram’. Based on a ‘Drop Centre’ design (which trams were built from about 1928 to 1938), the simulator features a genuine controller and handbrake from trams of that vintage together with the bells that those trams were equipped with.

At present, the tram ‘travels’ on the museum’s own track only, however  longer routes are being considered. The photo shows chief simulator ‘engineer’ Ken O’Brien at the controls.

Meanwhile restoration and maintenance programs continue. Currently, the 1915 Dreadnought class tram and a trolley bus from the 1950 era is being restored. A major refurbishment on the Scammel mentioned in the previous Hills Echo is undergoing restoration. As always, the museum is short of qualified tradesmen, particularly fitters and turners, electricians, electrical fitters and people who can work with light metal. New members are always welcome so please get in touch if you would like to join the museum or Men’s Shed.

This month, another of the gardens will be the focus of a planting session by The Men of The Trees – another local not-for-profit organisation specialising in promoting the planting of species which were native to our area when it was first settled. The first garden they planted is thriving!

Another on-going project involves assisting the local cricket club with a few small jobs.

The museum opens on Sundays from 12.30 pm to 4pm (unless its raining). Tickets prices are $14 for adults, $7 for children, $11 Concession and a family pass for $42.

The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by the Brisbane City Council.
