Helping Hands For Hoping Hearts

Brisbane Bunya Lions President Kay Liddle (Centre) and Picabeen Centre Manager Jillian Warren with Lions Club and Picabeen Community Centre volunteers.

201Q3 District Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) Co-ordinator Kevin Hedges and Brisbane Bunya Lions Club President Kay Liddle recently made a delivery of numerous bags of groceries, handmade blankets and a cash donation to Picabeen Community Centre in Mitchelton.

Overall, the nearly $1,000 in goods and funds given are the result of tireless fundraising work by members of the Brisbane Bunya Lions Club and continued support by Woolworths with their gift of some of the grocery items.

The ‘big cheque’ presented in the amount of $500 will be used to support the continuation of the Centre’s weekly Lunchtime BBQ Programme aimed at reducing social isolation and providing a shared meal for members of the community.

The donated groceries of food and toiletries will stock the Centre’s pantry to supply the Food Security Programme which provides nutritious food and toiletry items to locals in need.  The warm blankets will be distributed to homeless locals, or those at risk of homelessness and to those who simply cannot afford to buy a warm blanket.

Picabeen Centre Manager Jillian Warren gratefully shared that ‘Picabeen plays a pivotal role in the local community with supporting vulnerable and at-risk people. However, we wouldn’t be able to make this happen without the help of other charitable organisations such as the Lions. We are very grateful – thank you!’

‘These donations will help us to reach out to the most vulnerable in our community in a safe, non-stigmatising and an inclusive environment,’ she said.

Despite having to wear masks while making the donation, President Kay said, ‘I assure you, we were all proudly smiling under those masks – because we know the work we’re doing to support Picabeen Community Centre is reaching the right people in our local area.’

Picabeen Community Centre is a not-for-profit charitable organisation servicing the north-west community of Brisbane and is located at 22 Hoben Street, Mitchelton.

Brisbane Bunya Lions support various community organisations and people in the local area and welcome enquiries to support local families and initiatives.
