Latest Technology Supporting Prostate And Kidney Care Locally

Locals with prostate cancer and kidney stones can access quality care close to home with technology additions at North West Private Hospital.

Hospital CEO Chris Murphy said having the latest technology being utilised in Everton Park was a great support to local surgeons and a win for locals, with them not having to travel further afield to access.

Holmium laser technology began being used by specialists at North West Private Hospital in March, to treat kidney and bladder stones.

And urology specialists are now also using the Da Vinci Xi robotic surgical assistant which arrived at the hospital last year, for minimally invasive prostatectomies to treat localised prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer

According to the Cancer Council, one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by the age of 85, making it the second most common cancer in Aussie men, after non-melanoma skin cancer. Over 63% of those diagnosed are aged over 65.

Early detection and treatment can significantly improve prostate cancer survival. While it may not show symptoms in its early stages, the test most commonly used to aid early detection is the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test – although it is not a diagnostic test as it can only indicate changes in the prostate.

Kidney stones

According to Kidney Health Australia, kidney stones are one of the most common disorders of the urinary tract, particularly for those with a family history of kidney stones, or the elderly. Stones form when some waste materials clump together to form a solid crystal – from as small as a grain of sand to as big as a golf ball.

Urologists at North West Private Hospital offer treatment options for kidney stones.

Kidney Health Australia says people may help prevent kidney stones forming by staying hydrated with water, avoiding more than 1 litre per week of drinks with phosphoric acid – used to flavour carbonated drinks such as cola and beer – and reducing salt intake.

If you have concerns about your bladder, kidney or prostate health, speak to your GP.
