Have you ever wanted to master the art of lawn bowls but not had a clue where to start?
Well, here is a fantastic opportunity. In March, on every Tuesday evening at 6pm, the Gaythorne Bowls Club will again be hosting FREE ‘Learn to Bowl’ sessions on the greens at the club. If you are unable to attend the March sessions, perhaps you will be available in May, every Wednesday morning at 9am, when the FREE Learn to Bowl sessions will be on again.
Enjoy a relaxed couple of hours each time learning bowls basics under instruction. These are introductory sessions explaining and showing you how to roll the bowls, take grass and get the winning bowls beside the Jack. The only requirement is that participants wear flat-soled enclosed footwear.
These Learn to Bowl sessions are just one of the many events organised by the Brisbane City Council for their GOLD Program (Growing Old Living Dangerously). The Program is aimed at people aged 50 and over, encouraging them to try new activities to help keep them active and healthy. All the different activities are listed in the BCC’s booklet available at all BCC Libraries and on the council’s website www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/community-and-safety/community-support/seniors
It is always appreciated if people could telephone beforehand to advise of their attendance and to ensure rinks are available for everyone to play on. To book, phone Gaythorne Bowls Club on (07) 3855 2725
In addition, Gaythorne Bowls Club also encourages GOLD participants’ friends and family members, or other members of the public, if not in the 50 and over age group, to also come and join us on the greens at these times. Everyone who comes along for these introductory sessions on these days is able to play free of charge.
2021 is the 6th year that Gaythorne Bowls Club has been working with the BCC to host this activity and it is great to see so many people being introduced to the game of bowls. As it turns out, a few people decide to get more involved with the game and become members of Gaythorne Bowls Club or another bowls club closer to where they live.
After the sessions, participants are always welcome to enjoy the comforts of the clubhouse and refreshments are also available.
