Local childcare centre spreads joy in the community

Although COVID-19 restrictions are gradually easing, the current advice for those aged over 70, or aged over 60 with a pre-existing health condition, is still to stay home unless for essential purposes.

Many aged care facilities have closed their doors or implemented restrictions on visitors to protect the health and safety of their residents.

To help ease the loneliness experienced by many people during self-isolation, St John Qld started collecting children’s drawings and letters to distribute to aged care facilities, as well as people who live alone in the wider community.

For the past few months, the children from the Kindy class at Camelia Avenue Child Care Centre in Everton Hills have regularly sent in their artworks and well-wishes for St John Qld staff to deliver.

“We’ve had so much positive feedback from the residents in aged care facilities, and other isolated people, who have received these drawings and letters,” said Julie Norquay, General Manager of Community & Volunteer Services at St John Qld.

“It has put a smile on a lot of faces. A drawing or a letter can really lift a person’s spirits and bring so much joy. Some of the people that have received them have even written back to the children. It’s a wonderful way for younger and older generations to connect,” she said.

Maisie Clark from Brisbane has given her drawing from Camelia Avenue Child Care pride of place.

“I put the drawing up on my wall and look at it every day. It helps me feel less lonely,” she said.

In addition to spreading kindness through drawings and letters, St John Qld also offers other services including transport, Community calls, collection & delivery services, supported shopping, medical alarms and the Community Visitors Scheme.
