Local Twins Unite to Buy First Home

Bothers Luke and Sean Healy

Twin brothers Luke and Sean Healy say this year is a perfect time for first home buyers to step in to the market, with record low interest rates and generous government incentives helping them secure a property in the neighbourhood they grew up in.

The 26-year-old brothers have lived in the leafy suburb of Upper Kedron for most of their lives and wanted to purchase a home close to family and friends, without breaking the bank.

The new Cedar Glen release in Upper Kedron’s Ellendale community, offering house and land from $447, 559, gave them the opportunity they were looking for and, with a boost from the $15,000 First Home Owner Grant, superannuation savings and stamp duty exemptions, they are counting down the days to collecting their keys.

Luke says  the release of Cedar Glen came at the right time, allowing the brothers to design and build a home to suit their needs.

“We’ve spent most of our lives in Upper Kedron and have lots of friends and family here, so we’re really glad we have found an affordable way to enter the market and stay in our neighbourhood,” he said.

“We wanted to build so we could design our home to suit our lifestyle. We are building with Bold Living and have customised a design to include two master bedrooms and two living areas, so we each have our own space.

“Building new also means we are able to take advantage of government incentives which make buying a home even more affordable.

“We are receiving the $15,000 First Home Owner Grant and we used the government’s Super Saver scheme to accrue funds for our deposit in my superannuation account, which allowed us to save money faster due to tax breaks.

“We were also eligible for stamp duty exemptions, so we estimate we have saved more than $25,000 by choosing to build a new home and being aware of the incentives available to us at each step of the home buying journey.

“Of course, interest rates are also a big part of the equation. We did the maths and realised the mortgage repayments would be about the same as rent, so we thought we should jump in before they rise again.

“We’re really excited about having our own home. My brother and I have been inseparable since we were little kids, so buying a home together feels like a good way to start the next chapter of our lives.”

Sean Healy says the brothers were drawn to Ellendale because of its location just 12km to the Brisbane CBD and within easy reach of local shops and restaurants.

“My brother works in the city and I’m a sub-contractor which means my work can take me all around Brisbane, so choosing an address with access to public transport was a must,” he said.

“Because we’ve lived in Upper Kedron for about 20 years we have a good idea of what it’s  like. It’s nice to be in an area that is quiet and green, surrounded by bush and with views of the mountains,  while still having everything we need close by.

“Cedar Glen in particular appealed to us not only because it is affordable, but also because the developer Cedar Woods has really put thought in to the future growth of the community.

“There’s plans in the pipeline to build a new neighbourhood shopping village next door to Cedar Glen, which will be really convenient for us.”

Cedar Glen offers homesites from just $266,000, ranging from 263sqm to 602sqm. House and land packages are available starting from $447,559.
