New Choir Sings Out For Mental Health

Creative arts organisation Upbeat Arts will expand its operations to north Brisbane (Wavell Heights) this month, launching a new choir aimed at providing connection to those with mental health challenges.

With funding from Queensland Health, Upbeat Arts’ successful creative arts programs provide a unique form of ‘social prescribing’ for any adults who are disadvantaged as a result of their mental health challenges. Social prescribing is the referral of patients to non-medical activities. Upbeat Arts has been a leader in this area since it began its operations with its first choir in South Brisbane in 2014.

Queensland Mental Health Commissioner Ivan Frkovic said he was delighted to officially launch the new North Brisbane Absolutely Everybody Choir.

‘Upbeat Arts programs foster a safe, uplifting and fun environment and provide an opportunity for social inclusion, connection and building confidence,’ Ivan said.

COVID-19 had exacerbated the loneliness of those with mental health conditions, increasing the appeal and importance of the new north Brisbane choir.

Upbeat Arts – Absolutely Everybody Brisbane Choir

The original choir, the Absolutely Everybody Brisbane Choir, has helped around 400 people to transform or improve their lives since its establishment eight years ago. The teaching staff are qualified professionals who use their education and mental health skills to achieve measurable results for choir members.

Previous experience is not needed to join the choir and there are no auditions.
