New Citizens Welcomed to the Region

The 41 new Australian citizens who attended the Australia Day event with Sergeant Gary Stephens, Tim Mander MP for Everton and Counsellor for the Enoggera Ward Andrew Wines

Our local area welcomed 41 new citizens during a citizenship ceremony that was held as part of the Australia Day celebrations on the 26th January 2021 at the Arana Leagues Club.

The conferees came from all around the world including; Mexico, the United Kingdom and the Philippines. All conferees were all delighted to become Australian citizens.

The Rotary Club of Mitchelton did a tremendous job by organising this annual event, especially in light of the COVID-19 crisis and the restrictions that come with it.
Each new citizen was presented with a Certificate of Australian Citizenship by the presiding officer, the Hon. Tim Mander MP for Everton. Also in attendance was Counsellor for the Enoggera Ward Andrew Wines, Sergeant Gary Stephens from the Ferny Grove Qld Police Service and Ms Sonia Canu from the Department of Home Affairs. Rotary Club member Don Biffin, was an exceptional MC and Rotary Club President Dean Parham, gave a heart warming welcome speech to the audience.

Each new citizen was also presented with a gift bag containing Australian products that included; Tim Tams, Vegemite, Honey, Peanut Paste and an Aussie Flag, along with a native plant. The new citizens also had a photo taken receiving their certificate that will be sent to them as a memento of the occasion.

Entertainment of a high order was provided by the Jubilee Singers, who sang Australian songs and accompanied the assembled guests in rendering Advance Australia Fair at the end of the ceremony. The response on behalf of the new citizens was given by Mrs Alejandra Jimenez Ordpaza originally from Mexico.

The Rotary Club of Mitchelton would like to thank members Rod Shannon, the Official Photographer and Lee Hurst, the Social Media Chair, for their work on the day.
A special thanks is extended to club member, Ralph Davies, for his efforts in organising the entire event in order to ensure that the event proceeded.
Thanks also goes to the Arana Leagues Club, which provided the room and morning tea free of charge.
