Out and About in The Gap Ward

A monthly update from your Councillor Steven Toomey

Children’s Bridge Building Competition – Let’s build a Bridge!

I’m challenging all primary and secondary students to build a bridge in preparation of the Beech Street Bridge construction in Ferny Grove.

Your model bridge needs to be made using paddle-pop sticks, matchsticks, or kebab sticks. Bridges need to sit on a DL flyer and support 1kg. The winner will win a iTunes voucher. Good luck everyone I look forward to seeing your ideas!

Sunlit Sounds

Brisbane City Council is proud to sponsor the Sunlit Sounds Festival again on the 14th of September at Hilder Road State School from 2pm -9pm.

The event is gaining a cheeky reputation as ‘Splendour in the Gap’ with six bands and DJ’s Nowhere to Run providing the entertainment between each band. Bring a chair, blanket and gather your friends and family to enjoy some great music.

Twelve food trucks will also be there to provide a delicious dinner and there will be kids art sessions. Come along and support our young musicians and bands.

Search ‘sunlit sounds selector 2019’ in Spotify for a listen to this year’s line-up. 14th September 2019 from 2pm to 9pm, Adults $5, kids free. See you there!

Habitat News

Over the past few years I have funded the installation of habitat boxes in the ward. The boxes are placed in parks and adjacent to our local creeks and are designed specifically for fauna native to the local area.  Recently three boxes have been installed at the new habitat site on Ithaca Creek at Nathan Avenue, Ashgrove.

Further to this, a new innovative approach to managing the risk of dead trees on public land is starting in The Gap Ward. Rather than removing dead trees in parks, Council will turn the trees into ‘wildlife habitat high-rises’. These habitats are carved into the dead trees; micro bats are one of the species that are attracted to this type of habitat.

I am always looking for new opportunities to plant trees, if you would like a tree scoped for outside your property or a whole street tree planting, please contact me at the ward office and arrange an inspection.
