Q & A with Hazel Mango, Facility Manager at Regis Ferny Grove

By Katie Maclean, Publisher

Nestled in the peaceful, leafy surrounds of Lanita Road is Regis Ferny Grove Aged Care Facility. Boasting first class modern aesthetics, tropical courtyards along with extensive activity programs, entertainment and chef designed meals, you could be mistaken for thinking this aged care facility was a holiday resort!

Upon walking through the modern entrance with floor to ceiling windows framing the beautiful bushland, I was greeted by an infectious smile from Facility Manager, Hazel Mango. Hazel had organised a tour of the home to show me around. I was also delighted to have the opportunity to steal some time with her to ask a few questions about what makes her tick, along with learning a bit more about this cutting edge aged care facility we have on our doorstep.

Club Service Manager, Tom Ryan with Facility Manager Hazel Mango

What does your job as Facility Manager entail?
I look after the home as a whole and make sure it is operating how it should be. From meal service to scheduling to care plans to staffing there are so many aspects to my job. Trust me it can get very hectic however there is never a dull moment, however I cherish every second.

How long have you worked in Aged Care for?
I started my journey in the industry in 2003 and have worked for Regis Aged Care for 11 years now.

What made you choose to work in this industry?
I love looking after people and also have a great interest in aged care and healthcare so working in this industry was a great fit. Within aged care there is such a great variety in job roles and the chance to diversify and grow as a person.

Best thing about your job?
Hands down it has to be the feeling that you are part of a family. We spend a lot of quality time with our residents and get to know them on such a personal level that we really are one big family.

Residents form strong friendships between themselves which enforces that sense of community and family here. We also become close to resident’s family members and love when they come to visit and having a chat.

I get a great deal of satisfaction with my role that we have made a difference in someone’s life. I feel I have an emotional connection with all the residents and care for them deeply. I just love coming to work as we really do have some real characters!

What is the team like at Regis Ferny Grove?
I am blessed to have some of the best staff working here. We all get along well and work as part of a well-oiled machine to provide the top level of care to our residents. All our staff are highly educated and experienced, with many having been at Regis for a number of years.

What benefits does it bring working for a company like Regis?
There are so many benefits, however the first and foremost is the education our staff receive. All the staff (including myself) are on a constant learning journey, we partake in numerous courses, workshops and events. The aged care industry is always evolving so it is fantastic that myself and the staff can stay up to date with the latest news, progressions and discoveries from within the sector.

Another major benefit is that we have the opportunity to grow within the company. Regis really nurtures their staff so there is always chance to grow and learn. You will find many of our staff have been with the company for a long time which is a testament to how well we are supported.

Regis is an incredibly innovative company, so they are always staying at the cutting edge of healthcare.

What areas of Brisbane do residents here come from?
The majority of our residents are from the surrounding suburbs like Ferny Grove, Ferny Hills, Keperra, Mitchelton, Arana Hills, and Samford – but some are from further afield.

Do residents stay in touch with the community outside of the facility?
Oh yes, we encourage community engagement. We have several community groups and organisations drop in on a regular basis to give talks or demonstrations. It was only the other day we had Don from The Men’s Shed and Tramway Museum come in to carry out an activity which involved building small furniture items out of matchsticks.

There is also a designated bus for residents to use for outings. I can say that shopping trips to Brookside are always popular!

How do you keep the residents entertained?
Activity is such an integral and important part of the lifestyle here. Our lifestyle team organise daily activities and events (including outings). From choirs to dancing to yoga there is always something on here. We aim for our activities calendar to be inclusive ensuring there is something of interest for everyone

How do you celebrate special days at Regis Ferny Grove?
We have a themed calendar that outlines special days every month of the year. Father’s Day, EKKA, Christmas, Easter, ANZAC Day are just a few special days that we embrace. Our activities, gifts or special meals help celebrate each occasion.
