Servicing HOG’s Summer Garden

Strawberries have been in abundance this year.

The seasons of Autumn, Winter and Spring provided the Hills Organic Garden (HOG) with an abundance of wonderful vegetables.

Just some of the harvested goodies included; cabbages, beans, broadbeans, snow peas, baby spinach, radish, silverbeet, kale, tomatoes, plus so much more! The strawberry garden didn’t let the hard working team at HOG down either as there were many feeds of strawberries enjoyed over the cooler months.

Amazing produce has been harvested this year from HOG

However, with the warmer months approaching, the planting has quietened down and the gardens will receive a well earned rest. Nonetheless, members of the HOG community will still meet on a Sunday as there will still be plenty of work to do to maintain the gardens and, of course, the plants always need watering. The meeting times will change during the summer months to the afternoon (from 3pm to 5pm) as this will be a much cooler time of the day to tend to the garden.  The new summer time meeting will commence on the first Sunday of November.

Although the planting regime will not be as vigorous in summer, the group will still have some cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes and zucchinis growing.

A bit about HOG: The Hills Organic Garden (HOG) is a community venture where volunteers work together to grow a chemical – free harvest they can all share. The garden is set up on land leased from the Moreton Bay Regional Council at Bunya Road, Bunya, next to the Off-Leash Dog Park. The HOG community are a friendly and inclusive group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables in a sustainable way using organic principles.

People of all ages are welcome. They meet together on Sundays. Membership fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family, and $ 5 for Juniors. All money goes to the garden. Visit, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0407 582 980 for information and to apply for a membership.
