Serving up a good dose of community spirit

Last month, The Hills Echo team set the alarm clock early and headed down to The Hills Community Breakfast Club to discover a bit more about this free community breakfast that is being served up twice a week in Arana Hills.

The Hills Community Breakfast Club is a collaboration between local business TaxArana, the Picabeen Community Centre and the Older Women’s Network (OWNQ). The initiative is designed to help support our most vulnerable community members, through not only providing a warm meal, but offering access to support and information. It is also an opportunity for socially struggling people within our community to engage and connect with others.

Steve Brett, owner of TaxArana, was inspired to start this breakfast club after hearing of the good work that is happening in the Redcliffe area where a community breakfast has been supporting up to 50 people each morning.

‘I was inspired by the people who run the Redcliffe Breakfast Club and I began to wonder if there was a need for a similar need for assistance for homeless and disadvantaged people in the Arana Hills area,’ said Steve.

While it is difficult to accurately pinpoint the number of people who are currently homeless in our region, Picabeen Community Centre has revealed that there has been a significant increase in the number of people who are presenting at their centre who have become homeless in recent months.

Homelessness is not a choice and can be the result of many social and economic factors, such as domestic violence, addictions, physical or mental health and loss of employment.

To date, the organisers of The Breakfast Club have been overwhelmed with the influx of support from the community. One example is the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club, who have offered to help out financially to fund the food along with offering volunteers to cook up the BBQ.

‘We would not have been able to bring it all together without the assistance of the Lions, Picabeen and the Older Womens Network,’ said Steve.

The Hills Community Breakfast Club takes place in TaxArana’s front garden on the corner of Glenlee Street and Dawson Parade every Tuesday and Friday from 6:30am to 8am. If you have a business that would like to help out as a produce sponsor or if you would like to volunteer with the weekly breakfasts, please contact Steve on 3351 6111 or email
