Again this year many Gem Shows held by various Gem Clubs around the Brisbane area have been cancelled due to COVID-19 and associated regulations.
However, there is a Gem show in the coming weeks at the Kingaroy Showgrounds on 10th and 11th of April. For further information call 0491 606 427.
Members of the club recently held a display at the Arana Hills Library which was well received. The Library staff have invited the club to hold a display again next year due to the strong interest from the public. There were a variety of Gems and minerals on display in three of the Library’s cabinets. Young people were fascinated by the fossils on display whilst the older people were more interested in the cut and polished stones.
There are many aspects relating to the hobby. You can specialise in one area or try and spread your interest across many fields. Some of the areas are; fossicking, collecting minerals and fossils, polishing and cabbing gemstone material, faceting of precious stones, micro-mounting, (which is collecting and displaying of small mineral specimens etc.), silverwork and setting your own stones or just collecting gemstone specimens.
The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has its clubrooms located at 46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove and is open every Thursday from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing rocks and from noon to 3pm for silverwork. It is also open on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. The club caters for Gemstone enthusiasts in the North Western area of Brisbane.
If you feel this type of hobby interests you, do not hesitate to get in touch with either John (3351 1038) or Lloyd (3351 2093) who will be only too happy to have a chat to you about the workings of the club.
