Young Lad Lends Legacy a Hand

Grovely State School student Ashton Lochore has undertaken a challenge that will benefit his favourite charity Legacy.

Ashton had been competing in Glitz pageants for about a year and when the opportunity came to try a different kind of pageant, he was excited to give it a go. He entered the Mr Diamond Australia pageant which is more than a “beauty pageant” instead celebrating the beauty and diversity of everyone.

“Pageants in general have helped me overcome my stage fright and feel more confident,” said Ashton. “But Mr Diamond has also given me the opportunity to work on my public speaking skills and support a charity that meant something to me.”

The first step was to select a charity to support in the required fundraising. Since Ashton’s stepfather is a member of our Defence Force, Ashton chose Legacy as his desired recipient. The next task was to secure sponsorship and 10 year old Ashton started door knocking local businesses seeking assistance. Mitchelton
Branch of Go Gecko Metropolitan volunteered to be Ashton’s major sponsor in his quest. And so the hard work of fundraising began.
Ashton has utilised a variety of fundraising activities including auctions, raffles, marathon running, collection boxes and BBQs at Anaconda. Grovely State School has provided assistance and encouragement with a free dress day to support Ashton’s cause and permission to sell Legacy badges to his schoolmates. To date, Ashton has raised over $3,500 and with eight weeks to go he hopes to get near or surpass his target of $5,000.

Ashton has received unstinting support from his family and friends as he raises the awareness of Legacy throughout the local community. His untiring zest for fundraising for his chosen charity will see him continuing on this path until the pageant finals on 6th and 7th April.

Upcoming events include a current raffle and a Charity Pageant which will take place at Gaythorne RSL on 18th March. For further enquiries email Ashton on
