Youth MHFA Course offered by Young Minds Network in The Gap

The Youth Mental Health First Aid course was created by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia, which offers award-winning training in 25 countries. MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. The training helps to raises awareness and decrease the stigma associated with mental illness.

The course covers signs and symptoms of mental health problems including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, psychosis and substance use problems and equips participants with skills to assist adolescents who are showing signs of mental illness. Participants will learn how to approach a young person and begin a conversation about mental health concerns, and to assist in the following crises: suicidal thoughts and behaviours, non-suicidal self-injury, panic attacks, traumatic events, severe psychotic states, severe effects from alcohol or other drug use, and aggressive behaviours. Completing a Youth Mental Health First Aid course is beneficial for anyone spending time with young people, whether professionally, or family and friends. Participants will also learn about adolescent development, where and how to get help for a young person, and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective.
